Gangs in the Mid-1900s
Because America was still growing, there was not enough time and money to train gang members. This meant there were not a lot of gangs. Most gangs during this time period were formed by troubled teenagers.
One of the crimes made by gangs in the 1900 was loitering. Gangs just stood around doing nothing. Another crime was vandalism. With coal dust on their backs, gangsters leaned in windows and made black marks on the wall.
Gangs were formed in poverty-stricken areas. There was racial oppression against many of the people that joined gangs there. They were started by young people and they were made to unify poor youths, but vandalism and gang fights made the impression we have on gangs today. Some groups during this time period were the Vice Lords, Latin Kings, and Bishops. These groups were predominantly African American and Puerto Rican.
